Statement on Welsh parliament (Senedd) vote to call for a ceasefire in Gaza

The Palestinian Mission to the UK welcomes the vote on 8 November by the Welsh parliament, the Senedd, to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

We agree wholeheartedly with John Williams MS (Newport East) that there is “no military solution,” only a political one.

We agree that the killing of a child every ten minutes in Gaza “cannot continue,” as Sioned Williams MS (South West Wales) put it.

And we agree with Jane Dodds MS (Mid and West Wales) that the UK should “spearhead the pursuit of lasting peace.”

Gaza is suffering a calamity as a result of Israel’s military assault. More than 10,000 people have been killed, among them nearly 5,000 children. One million people have been displaced from their homes. And Israel has cut food, water, electricity and fuel supplies to 2.3 million people.

This is unconscionable.

In order to secure lasting peace, this carnage must stop.

We must address the root causes of conflict.

Said Ambassador Husam Zomlot: “Only once the national and human rights of the Palestinian people are upheld equal to all other nations can we reach a just and sustainable peace.”
