Last week H. E. Dr Husam Zomlot continued to engage US audiences and supporters of Palestine in the USA in a series of speeches across the country. At Harvard, University of Chicago, J Street, the Jerusalem Fund and the Middle East Institute, audiences heard from his excellency about the outlines of the Palestinian strategy in response to the “Deal of the Century”
Although Dr Zomlot was planned to be in the USA in person, he was not able to travel in light of US administration’s measures against the Palestinian people.
Dr Zomlot delivered the Reverend Dr. Richard L. Pearson 2019 Lecture at the the Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts in the Harris School of Public Policy, The University of Chicago.
He outlined the Palestinian strategy, focusing on three parts. First, Dr Zomlot said that Palestine will seek a multilateral framework to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict given the failure of the US to act as an honest mediator over the past 20 years.
Popular resistance will be the second part of the Palestinian strategy, Dr Zomlot went on to say, adding that this will force the Palestinians to attempt to define what it means to resist the Israeli occupation. He noted that social cohesion, education, and working on the tenacity between the Palestinians and their lands are all legitimate avenues.
Explaining the third part of the Palestinian strategy, Dr Zomlot argued that the role of the international community is not merely the the preservatin of the rules of international law, but also enforcing accountability and scrutiny against violations of this law.
In his speech at Harvard’s Kennedy School of government, Dr Zomlot warned against the lack of action on Israel’s military occupation, which has been the longest in history.
Dr Zomlot’s tour included delivering remarks at The Jerusalem Fund & Palestine Center in Washington DC as well as a webinar with JStreet.
