PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi on the passing of Abdel Mohsin Al-QattanDec. 4, 2017, midnight
“On behalf of the Palestinian leadership and the people of Palestine, we note with deep sorrow the passing of Abdel Mohsin Al-Qattan, educator, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political leader who passed away early this morning at the age of eighty-eight in London.
Abdel Mohsin was truly a person of principle and exceptional compassion whose unwavering support and commitment to enhancing education and cultural excellence among children, educators and artists in Palestine and across the Arab world serves as a model for others to emulate. He was one of the founders of the Welfare Association in Geneva and Palestine’s representative in the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development. In 1994, he launched the A.M. Qattan Foundation in London, and by 1998, the Foundation thrived in Palestine with its cultural and educational initiatives.
Throughout his life, he was known for his active support of many institutions that included the Institute for Palestine Studies, the American University of Beirut, the Centre for Arab Unity Studies, the Ahmad Bahaa Edin Foundation (Egypt), Birzeit University, MIFTAH, and Masarat. As one of the founders of the PLO and a former speaker of the Palestinian National Council, he was courageous and indefatigable in his defense of Palestinian rights and freedom.
Dr. Ashrawi noted, “Abdel Mohsin touched the lives and hearts of many people who share the highest form of respect and affection for him near and far. I have personally valued his friendship, support and warmth as a human being for decades. His passing is a great loss to his family, friends and colleagues, as well as the Palestinian people and cause as a whole.”
