Breakfast with the Archbishop of CanterburyDec. 17, 2015, 5 a.m.
Today, H.E. Manuel Hassassian was invited to break his morning bread with Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Ambassador thanked the Archbishop for his invitation and before the hustle and bustle of the day crowded in on them, at 7.45 to be exact, the two were pondering the hard questions of our time.
They discussed the current tragedy unfolding in the Middle East and Palestine, in particular, the present stalemate in the peace process, the utter despair of Palestinian youth and the current uprising were a key focus of their discussion. They also deliberated the refugee crises, the Christian communities in the Middle East, including Palestinian Christians and their plight under Israeli occupation. Israel’s increasingly enforced restriction of access to the holy sites was also a major area of concern.
Discussing prospects for peace in the Middle East may not be the best topic to chat about over breakfast but it shows quiet faith in the human spirit has not yet failed.
